2010 Molson Canal Concert Series

Posted by Anonymous

Another year and another summer of concerts to come. Here is where we will track the line up of the 2010 Molson Concert Series in Lockport NY. This is the third year of the concerts and it has been recently announced (LUSJ - Buffalo News) that the concerts will be extended for three more years with 9 shows per summer.

Performers in the 2010 series lineup have not been announced by the promoter yet. Tucker said he’s been told the names of a few headline acts, booked or close to booked, but he’s sworn to silence until all nine shows are confirmed.

“I can tell you this: If the lineup shapes up like (Paradowski) wants it to, it could be our best season ever,” he said.
I'm not sure of Mayor Tucker's exact tastes but hopefully his words ring true. Last summer's  Our Lady Peace and Queensryche shows were highlights for me. Last year's 2009 thread is here.

Artists will be added as they are leaked/found up to the official series announcement date which is usually early June. If anyone finds any information feel free to drop them in the comments below. Recent updates will be shown in red.

All shows are held outdoors at the Ulrich City Center downtown on Main St rain or shine and are free. Visiting Lockport and looking for other things to do? Look here: "Lockport on the Erie Canal"

Seems that was posted over night. I'll create a spearate post on it since, to me, it seems irrelevent to conversations about the event itself.

As mentioned in the blog post above, it is usually early June, about 3 weeks prior to the first concert.

I'll add Rusted Root too, even though it is Pollstar ;) For some reason Three Dog Night disappeared off their list.

Our Lady Peace is shown to be playing 7/2 according to the Edge's website. Why two bands that played back to back last year playing again this year?

B.G of Lockport said...

The promoter of this concert series might be a sleep at the wheel. She came to the Common Counsel asking for 3 more years of our tax dollars for concerts. We gave it to her...she has a venue...why does it look like were going to have the same bands as last year? Two look solid Our Lady Peace and Rusted Root...both solid bands granted...but... been there done that...why not bands like .38special, Huey lewis and the News...these bands play at casinos..all across the country?? I know Styx is touring and as up to a couple of weeks ago they were no venues in Western New York....now Darien Lake has them...Kansas was a band rumored to be coming..posted at there web site then pulled...now playing at the state fair in the Cuse..what's up??? I sure hope the last unannounced four bands rock....or next year we should find someone more aggressive, and ready to promote Lockport.

Black Phillip said...

Repeats, are rather lame. But just because someone is touring, doesn't mean that they are A: available, or B: within the means of a free concert series of this size. So I'm not going to pass judgment on who should be there, but I will based on who's there again.

B.G of Lockport said...

It's not rather lame... it is lame...we had the Cult and Queensryche here last year...which shows we can get these bands here...I also do not understand the huge secret the promoter runs these concerts buy....they wait so long to announce these shows usually late May...every time you sign a band for a date...announce it at your home site..get the word out...get people talking....get people to start planning to come to Lockport on a given friday night. I guess I just expect to much....or want more excitement about these shows.....I guess I just want people outside of Lockport to get fired up to come here...as a destination....to Rock

Jack Smith said...

It is a valid point. If the reason the City is having these concerts is to bring people to Lockport wouldn't it be beneficial to announce the bands as soon as they're signed? Then people, whom we might call tourist, would have the opportunity to make plans around the show they would like to see. BTW-The tree thing was meant to be funny, you guys need to lighten up once in a while!

Anonymous said...

I don't necessarily see anything wrong with a repeat here and there. The Violent Fems did multiple years in a row at Thursday in the Square. I was sad when they were no longer on the bill.

As of right now most things are rumors unless you see them on the band's site. Pollstar listings always come and go. I find it suspect that OLP is doing paid shows at the Riviera and then doing a free on here but you never know.

I think it is fun to try to search them out etc. People can get their info from blogs like this that try to track them early. I also don't feel she is off by announcing a few weeks before the series to keep it fresh in people's minds. Once I here the lineups for all the local series I end up forgetting them and missing a few I was interested in

These are all still $20-35 shows that we get to see for around $0.35 cents per resident while marketing Lockport. There will be "lesser" shows to make up for the bigger name ones. I bet some larger shows don't make money between the ability to sell beer and the price of the band.

Last year's line up was the best yet. I'm anxious to see this year's fill out.

Anonymous said...

HAHA you got me with Manson. Good thing I clicked the link or I would have been spreading the word

Anonymous said...

Manson would be an interesting show ;)

The Scorpions will also be in the US this summer on what they are labeling their "final tour". I think it would be a great show appealing to the biggest current demographic of the series.

B G of Lockport said...

Good to see coucilman Smith is not asleep at the wheel...we should sign then promote...Scorpions would rock....

Anonymous said...

Tears for Fears - Aug 13th, per their official tour announcement on Friday.

Anonymous said...

Interesting...I saw is as "Venue to Be Determined" earlier in the week at another site and thought it may be here seeing it is on a Friday. Thanks.

Black Phillip said...

The reasoning behind not promoting was always given as the promoter believes that you you announce it too early, it's not fresh in people's minds by the time the concert actually appears. It's not like you have to buy a ticket, so there's not a constant reminder. I can understand that as a reason not to make any official announcements before hand.

You could also make the argument by not promoting, but allowing some information to be leaked is almost a free ARG type promotion.

Jack.. I am pretty lightened up, but people say the dumbest things all the time, and mean it. As you know, it's hard to know when someone is joking in print.

Anonymous said...

The reason the promoter doesn't announce the lineup until it's complete because things change and get rearranged. It is much better to come out as a whole rather than just dribble out the bands as they get booked because then it's harder to promote the series all at one time. Buffalo Place and Artpark repeat the same shows pretty much year after year. How many times will America play Artpark? They repeat bands that do well and get the most requests by locals to bring them back. It's a lot of risk when you don't know how a band will draw. The Cult was a great name last year, but didn't come anywhere near paying for itself because the band was very expensive and the concession sales were actually very weak.

Anonymous said...

Hi everybody. Hey MJ, here's the link for Tears for Fears: http://www.tearsforfears.net/tears-for-fears-us-tour-dates-info/

All valid points. When you mentioned America at Artpark I had to laugh.

Anonymous said...

Our Lady Peace was probably the biggest free concert in WNY history...that thing was massive...they would be INSANE not to bring it back...

Anonymous said...

I think the REO concert in 2008 was the biggest I've attended so far in the series. The crowd was backed up into the Port-a-Potty lines. OLP was large too but I think it missed the REO benchmatk. I'm excited thay are back too.

One possible hurdle for the promoter is the ticket/ beverage lines. There are many show that I would like something but choose not to bother because of how long the wait is. It may create a flat, or even reduced demand at larger shows.

Anonymous said...

REO would have been better if they would have shut up and just play already. Man they had an intro to every song, got a little boring. Over all loving these events looking forward to this season. I havent't had to wait all that long for a ticket/beverage even when the line was long but the system could use a revamp. Always room for improvement. Generally relax & enjoy.

bring queensryche back great show thank you also I would love to see Dream Theater here in lockport

Anonymous said...

it would be nice to see local bands open up for bands lets make lockport a true music area

Rick said...

YES DREAM THEATER WOULD BE GREAT

Anonymous said...

DREAM THEATER WOULD BE GREAT WOW!!!!they may be on tour with iron maiden during that time though ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA might be a great choice I saw them at the square last year it was great

Anonymous said...

Dream Theater...one of my top 5 bands. I'm not sure how the 10 minute+ songs would connect with a lot of casual people though. (I went to a Gov't Mule concert once. I swear it was one 3-hr long song made up on the spot ;) Dream Theater is opening for Iron Maiden July 3rd in Toronto.

Interesting thought on the "true music area". WNY was some unique venues but there is really no "true music area".

As for local bands, I thought a good portion of them are, at least from reading past LUSJ articles. I get e-mails from time to time trying to sell me on a local opening act. Unfortunately I have zero to do with the concerts. If anyone has been through the process, please fill us in.

Anonymous said...

I was informed that they would not book the same bands 2 years in a row when asked about a band from 08 series. Now I see that policy no longer stands, WHAT'S UP WITH THAT????

Black Phillip said...

In a retraction to my earlier statement, if it's a huge draw, why not do it again?

Granted, if Sloan was in Lockport every year, I don't think I'd complain. :)

suprshell77 said...

I didn't read through ALL of the comments to see if someone already asked this, but is Rusted Root confirmed for sure? The link you have on here directs you to their 2009 tour schedule, which shows them playing on June 26th. The band's schedule for 2010 says nothing about Lockport NY on the 25th. Just sayin'.

Anonymous said...

Any new Concert "Rumors" too announce? How about booking Joan Jett and the Blackhearts? They are touring this summer. That would be a Fun show for everyone. The Black Crowes would be cool too. Could use another Country/Southern Rock concert too...

Anonymous said...

blue oyster cult/ styx/jeff beck ( that will never happen for free) Peter frampton How about some new acts

Unknown said...

There are a number of reasons bands get booked year after year. Usually it takes several of them such as:

The band enjoyed the venue.
The band liked the audience.
The band liked the way the promoter treated them.
It was an easy show (or easy money) for the band.
The promoter and the band's booking agency have a good relationship or are representing several bands being booked in the series.

The more of the above that align like the stars each year, the more likely to see a band again.

Anonymous said...

I found a source saying Kansas on the 6th of Aug, though it lists it as Tonawanda which is obviously a typo.

Also in the north east this summer at smaller venues: Scorpions, Heart, Huey Lewis and the News, Steve Miller Band, Chicago, Doobie Bros, Moody blues, Willie Nelson

Rik Emmett is going to be fantastic. His set list consists of all the old Triumph classics these days. Such an excellent showman and one of the top guitarists out there. You will definitely be amazed. I guarantee that he will prove to be one of this season's highlights. Go see this show!

Anonymous said...

Thanks Rik! ;)

I recall cruising around in my aunt's '78 gold trans-am at the age of 5; T-tops off, the shaker hood shaking, listening to Triumph/Journey/etc. I feel it will be a great show.

And who would have thought there would be so many Dream Theater fans lurking around?

JustChrissy said...

Seems that Rusted Root isn't as "confirmed" as thought. If you click the link for the June 25the date listing them, the site it takes you to shows them in Lockport on the 26th. So either they have the wrong date listed or its not "confirmed" as originally thought.

Nothing is realy confirmed until the official announcement. Thanks for the heads up.

Black Phillip said...

If you have a million dollars to donate... maybe.

Anonymous said...

I was just kidding - besides, it would take a lot more than a million dollars. It would be nice if they would bring in new acts.
Rusted Root, Emmitt and Kansas have all been there in the past few years.

Black Phillip said...

It's the internet, you never know... :)

But as someone above posted, if they were a huge draw, it's hard to say that someone shouldn't be back.

I would love to see Asia or Def Leppard...both are playing casinos and small venues...maybe someone could contact the promoter for next years lineup..

How about Faith No More there touring in NY in august they are the best band of all time in my opinon Mike Patton is god

Can't wait for the OLP show to be confirmed! It was awesome last year. I spoke to both Duncan and Steve at the shows in N. Tonawanda and they both mentioned they'd be back for Locokport this year so I'm guessing it's only a matter of time before it's announced.

I can't but hold my comments. Here we go again same old same old line up. As for someone mentioning these bands playing FREE, far from. The bands cost about 20-30K to play. That's what the beer and concession sales are for. To cover those costs, but come on. Sick of Kansas, Rusted Root, Rik Emmit. Apparently her mapping skills have gone to the way side, you watch a bands tour route if they are close you offer the gig. She gave three years of good bands, now the series is renewed another 3 years? You are going to see tax payers money get sucked up for the same old same old line up. THANK GOD North Tonawanda is doing their concerts on Saturdays and hopefully have a much better "newer" line up than Lockport. We can always look for Art Park too, if the state doesn't shut the park down! BRING US SOMETHING NEW...these same bands have played this area for TEN YEARS straight. I won't be going to any of those concerts this year with that horrible line up.

Anonymous said...

There are not gonna be free concerts in NT this year due to lack of funding

blahblahblah said...

Artpark has repeats all the time. These old washed up bands are the only ones playing these free shows. Also who would be dumb enough to think these bands were playing for free? I'm pretty sure everyone realizes that by saying "free" concert we mean there is no need to buy a ticket. I'm pretty sure no one will care whether you attend or not anon.

You know people will complain about anything ! The concerts are free, let me repeat, free and if some of my tax $ are going to the growth and entertainment of this town then so be it. I say great job and so what if some of the bands played here before they are great bands giving their time. Enjoy them, have a nice night out, and enjoy your town and if you don't want to see them again then stay home and leave the room to me!!! Mayor Tucker keep up the great job!!!! and as for the selection of bands good job for all of your citizens to enjoy what they like.

Black Phillip said...

I don't like your lack of capital letters at the start of your name. Or that you're complaining about people's complaining... :>

I guess some people would just rather have the halcion days of an empty downtown when the South Block property was empty (except for a few stacked I beams) and the "Golden Triangle" was an empty field.

But I did happen to catch America on LCTV... for a morbid curiosity mind you... and man, I just really felt bad... it must have been like seeing Sinatra when he had to use giant teleprompters to remember his songs.

Greetings~

Personally, I can't complain too much about the line up for this years concerts at Lockport.

Granted, from what I see , there are 2 repeats(one not yet confirmed) from years past.

Ohh...lets not do repeats especially if they brought in good crowds(yes sarcasm meant).

If it brings people to DT Lockport.. all the better.

Granted if they do more than a couple years it will get stale.. don't get me wrong there . .. but a reapeat a couple years in a row doesn't hurt.

Considering they are FREE ADMISSON concerts, thats not too bad.

Just go and enjoy the concerts... if you don't like a band .. dont go .. hell from where I live(depending on sound and weather factors) I can hear the concerts from my house if I dont feel like going. Also I know of multiple people who live out near the Davison Rd. Campus (this was verbally said to me and I DO trust these people) they could hear quite a few of the concerts THAT FAR ... ( I belive it was either OLP and/or Queesryche and/or Charlie Daniles)

Granted, that doesnt seem that far if you are driving (5-8 minutes from the concert site).. but still .. the fact they heard it was an intersesting aspect.

Keep the good bands going .. as long as it brings people its all good as far as I'm concered.

Just my $0.02

I hope the Our Lady Peace show gets confirmed. i couldn't make it last year and I've been wanting to see them in concert for years

I think the powers that be will really miss the boat if they dont add a hard rock/metal headliner from the 80's like they did last year with The Cult and Queensryche those 2 shows by far were the best shows in Lockport in years and shows everyone how vital this music still is with the right bands playing. SO please please please (to quote James Brown) please fill the last 2 spots with some Rock and Roll baby!! Hint Hint.. Ratt, Cinderella, Scorpions, Dokken, Twisted Sister all are back this year with new albums and are touring. Have your people call their people.

Two questions...
Does anyone know who I could contact to offer some photography? I have noticed that there have NOT been alot of great pics in the past, of the bands, members, stage setups 7 so on... just mostly crowd shots and A LITTLE band stuff. I would like to volunteer as an amateur photographer, to take on this challenge. But who can I speak with to get my foot in the door?

Also, my daughter would like to work as a beer girl or at a beer truck. Again, who do you contact?

LoneWolf said...

To : Anon @ 5/21/2010 8:43 P.M.

As far as Pics.. I was gonna do the same thing for a University Project .. and I was TOLD depending on WHERE you want to take the pictures from to talk with Ulrich Development(David Ulrich) to get any good pics ... as far as Overhead or otherwise .. Cameras are allowed at all of the Concerts... Good luck :)

Regardinhg "Beer girls" ... if im not mistaken those are hired almost exculsivly via Molsen .. OR from some of the Bars in Western NY .....so unless you have an "in" its next to impossible to get a job as a "Beer Girl" ..

Best of luck however.

Very poor lineup i love Our Lady Peace and Tears For Fears was a great act in the 80s but come on where is the music for people in there 20s and 30s like me in lockport i live 5 minutes away and i see only 2 shows that i will go to.We need a new promoter Kathy has been bringing in the same washed up bands for 10 years now.How about limp bizkit, disturbed, goo goo dolls, green day there all playing at darien lake if a good band is close by offer them a bid.Hopefully next year the lineup will be more friendly to younger fans.

Anonymous said...

Ken, have you looked up what they are charging for tickets to see these bands? With the diversity of music out there, it must be a very difficult task working with their management teams to have a free show in Lockport in their schedules. And you obviously have not paid attention to the diversity of the crowd at these concerts. Time to get your head in the real world and enjoy the fact that you don't have to pay admission...you don't have to purchase anything if you don't want to!!

Well, yes, they are all playing at Darien Lake, which means that they are bringing down some rather large amounts of cash for concerts.

And, I wouldn't want to go see ANY of the bands you mentioned, so that lineup would be awful. I also couldn't imagine the amount of damage that would be cased. Remember, what pays for these bands are beer sales, and they need to make sure that the majority of people watching would also want (or be able) to buy a beer.

Trust me, I could come up with a ton of other bands that'd I'd rather see, but none of them are touring, or at the point in their career where doing concerts like this makes sense.

These concerts are quite costly you have to pay the Bands ,security, beverage verdors, stage and lighting. The promotors are always looking for sponsors the more sponsor money the better the line up .This year has a good mix of music.Come out and enjoy Fridays largest happy hour !!!!!!!!!!

Ok well i agree with you guys to a certain point but they said Tears For Fears never plays free shows and here they are so it is possible. We landed Queensryche last year that was huge.I just wanna see more bands that dont come around here that often thats all we need a new promoter Kathy needs to go.I love Our Lady Peace that will be the biggest crowd this year cant wait for that 1 and please add more portapotties i dont wanna wait 30 minutes to take a leak.

Hard Rock Cafe Annouced a free Saturday Series in the Falls:

July 3 — Gord Downie, with openers Joshua James and Alison Pipitone.

July 10 — The English Beat, with openers Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad and Floozie.

July 17 — The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra plays Pink Floyd, with opener Scott Celani.

July 24 — Soul Asylum with openers The Incurables, DoDriver and A Potter’s Field.

July 31 — Lou Gramm, with openers Free Henry, McCarthyism and eXit!

Aug. 7—Tonic, with openers Ryan Star, More Than Me and Ten Cent Howl

I always though Soul Asylum would make a good fre show.

I find it very hard to believe that people can be so selfish and disrespectful to complain about FREE concerts, while the line up may not ALL be for you, just remember, they are FREE. Great entertainment don't come FREE these days, You all should be Thanking the great city of Lockport for making this happen!!!! THANK YOU LOCKPORT!!!!

Wish we could have landed 1)Gord Downie tragically hip 2)Ed Kowalczyk from Live 3)Les Claypool from Primus there all playing in wny Les Claypool is the only 1 you have to pay to see. Please bring acts like these here next year for the younger fans like me.

Anonymous said...

Well Ken, maybe next year they will be able to find more bands that will please you. In the meantime I guess you will just have to content yourself with traveling more than 5 minutes to see those guys...still for free...like a lot of people do. The Hard Rock Cafe has both the money and clout to pull in artists that Lockport can't. For the record, Our Lady Peace put on a great show last year, but there were problems in that crowd of "younger fans"

Anonymous said...

Really man, there are a lot of bands that I'd like to see for free too. Of course you're entitled to your opinion like the rest of us, but please stop bringing us down with the negativity. You can't change the lineup.

who are the openers ????

I noticed that every other concert venue in the western ny area not only lists the national acts but , also list the opening bands . Why havent the opening bands been listed for the Molson Concert Series ? After all , if we are to spend the day there we would like to know what to expect !

Anonymous said...

They usually do list it.

The offcial website is lacking as a whole this year. No directions, no mention of venue etc.

Someone's slacking....

Black Phillip said...

That's nothing new.. it was lacking when it was in NT...

Maybe they wanted to keep a surprise?

Usually they are the last to announce their lineup. I guess to many were leaked to fast this year......

Sorry guys i was only trying to voice my opinion i live in lockport and i do think it is a great thing that mayor tucker has brought to the city.It brings people from all over to see these free shows and it puts lockport back on the map.I have seen riders on the storm, queensryche, our lady peace and they were all great shows. They had Peter Frampton signed for the last show this year but he shortened his tour.I get there around 5 buy my tickets and come back around 8 so i dont have to wait in line when i get there you can use them all year. Please add more portapotties for the bigger shows the line for the olp show last year was atleast 20 minutes.

Anonymous said...

i can't seem to find the full address for where the concert is being held.. i'm coming from marland and was just wondering how long of a drive it's going to be.

Black Phillip said...

You can use 80 Main Street, Lockport NY as a good reference point:

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&safe=off&client=opera&ie=UTF8&q=lockport+ny&fb=1&gl=us&ei=NZ0LTP6vFoOeygSLqaT8Cw&ved=0CBgQpQY&view=map&geocode=FTW7kgId-kdP-w&split=0&sll=43.168857,-78.702504&sspn=0.050199,0.079902&iwloc=A&sa=X

as that's one of the resturants in the City Center.

But from Maryland it's going to be a 8-9 hour drive, depending on stops. Or at least, that's about how long it takes me to get to DC.

Here are a couple of links to the Thursday "Free" Concerts in Syracuse and Rochester this year:
http://www.cnymarketblockparty.com/schedule.html
http://www.rochesterevents.com/festivals-events/party-in-the-park

also.. Los Lonely Boys are playing a free show at the Rochester Jazz Fest this Sat the 12th and Smashmouth are playing the following Sat. the 19th also Free. So for those that dont mind traveling for good music.. there are plenty to go to. Lockport is a great destination for Friday Nights!

Anonymous said...

The Syracuse looks like a great line up for those of us raised on 80's metal. I'd pay the $10 cover to see a few of those bands (Warrant, Skid Row, Asia, etc)

I always thought it would be neat to have the last Lockport show have a small cover (say $10) for a "bigger" band to close out the summer.

Anonymous said...

I see that you have updated the lineup with the opening bands. I had written to the website designers on June 3rd concerning the lack of information, letting them know that a lot of people were asking about it. I just got an email back today saying that the site wasn't finished when it was launched. There is now additional info on it about openers, directions, parking, etc., with more to come. I thought it was nice of them to take the time to write back to me. Now people can make their plans more easily!! :)

Anonymous said...

I saw that too. My guess is that having a majority of the headlining bands leaked forced them to announce the line up early. Ususally this is the last of the three area free concert series to announce its lineup. The promoter liked to be the last to be the freshest in the communities mind.

The internet nowadays has changed a lot of things in the music industry. This is just another.

Anonymous said...

free or not - lineup sucks this year, big time. Won't be at any of them. I know that will bother people that I said it sucks....but it's plain true. Kansas? Rik Emmet? Gretchen Wilson? c'mon. First year was really good. Second year...ok. this year> awful. have fun everybody.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, you too!! Maybe next year something will be more to your liking. :) I guess it all depends on your taste in music...I personally saw only one band the first year, two the second, and plan on seeing three (or four)this year, if I can. It won't ruin my life if I don't get to them, but it's a nice way to spend a summer evening on the cheap! And you can always leave early and not feel like you wasted money on a ticket!

As much as I'd love to stage the "MJ Canal Concert Series" with all my personal favorite bands...I don't have the dedication too.

The first year was my favorite overall lineup.
Last year had some of my faovirte bands
This year is so-so to me. Though I'll refain from playing the Cartman role: "Screw you guys...I'm going home" ;)

How about the cash?

Ok, for full disclosure... first year, there wasn't anyone I wanted to see. second year, wanted to see The Cult, but couldn't make it... this year, I'll be at Tears for Fears, and may stop off for a while for Blues Travelers.

So there!

one question, are you allowed to bring a dog??? I jus wanna make sure for next Friday

Anonymous said...

I'm pretty sure they are not allowed inside the lot. There is no problem staying on closed part of Locust Street though. You can still see from the side of the stage. We've hung out with our dog there before.

Anonymous said...

I love it how Rusted Root played 1 hour and 15 minutes late and didn't even apologize, this venue stinks for sound too way to washed out, I know its free and all but so is the party in the park in Rochester and that is a way, way better venue

Anonymous said...

I agree, and I hate how I have to walk through a bunch of drunks at bars to get out, this place is poorly organized. Also, why do you have to go to two different booths to get beers? Stupidity!

Anonymous said...

1) 1 booth is for tickets. You then proceed to other booths for beer/etc. It reduces the number of people that need to handle and track money.

2) There are three entrances/exits, only one of which is past a bar. It is also most likely the most crowded. And go figure...drunks at a concert? ;)

3)I agree the around is poor in areas. Most likely stemming from having to place the stage at top of the slope instead of at the bottom. I'd love an additional set of speakers halfway back. Or a solution to putting the stage at the other end.

Anonymous said...

Rusted Root could not have been an hour and fifteen minutes late, that would mean the headliner would have to play three hours (the series website shows the time as 5:30-11:00). The band played a two hour show for free, and I was at the Rochester show last week and it took over an hour for people to get in past security and the stage is smaller.
As for additional speakers, I would imagine that would be a problem for people living in the area as it would create a lot more spill over of noise in the neighborhood. The sound was all right to me when I walked around, and I think it is all right to have it low enough to talk at the back end of the venue because the music nuts are upfront anyway

"Does anyone know who I could contact to offer some photography? I have noticed that there have NOT been alot of great pics in the past, of the bands, members, stage setups 7 so on... just mostly crowd shots and A LITTLE band stuff. I would like to volunteer as an amateur photographer, to take on this challenge. But who can I speak with to get my foot in the door?
"

To "offer" photography? Every show I have been at has had dozens of photographers there from newspapers and working for the promoter, as well as a few who could get a pass inside the rail.

I took literally hundreds of photos the first year, as a Buffalo.com intern, and so have others. If you think there aren't good photos out there, you're not looking very hard.

Getting good shots of bands isn't easy, either. You have to camp out close to the stage during the openers, or else you won't get back close enough later.

My impression of the promotion team is that they don't care about accommodating photographers unless you're connected with someone: sponsor, band, city, etc. Otherwise, they don't prohibit photography, but won't help you out either. Don't expect a pass to restricted areas.

At least, they don't have a restriction on cameras with interchangeable lenses, like Artpark, or a total (but ineffective) ban like Thursday at the Square.

Greetings~

I would like to preface this with the fact that I AM NOT meaning this as a slam toward any one .. and this is specifially in regard to "time frames"

ACCTUALLY... acctually the whole "line up" was a bit late..and mixed up.

I'll Explain HOW I know this..

"The Funky Beets" were SUPPOSED to open(according to LSJ) at 5:30.. they did't.. "RagBirds" opened.

I got at the "court yard" about an hour after getting done with work..(between7:00 and 7:30) and I heard about 1/2 of the last set set(maybe less) of "Rag Birds", then i listned the full run of "Funky Beets"(BOTH OF WHICH I enjoyed)

After a break from "Funky Beets" Rusted Root came on. According to my watch it was around 8:30/8:45 ish.

I Stayed till they played "Send me on my way".. and I could still hear them at my house on Washburn Street. They played till around 11 or so possibly 11:30.. as far as I heard.. (not from LSJ reports, from freinds that were there.)

SO.. using that time frame ..For Rusted Root ONLY 8:30 (at the earliest) - 9:30 = 1 hour...9:30 - 10:30 = another hour...10:30-11:30 = another hour.

So 1+1+1 = 3 hours (unless my math escapes me) We ended up with a 3 hour tour from a rather top name band FOR FREE ADMISSION..

Just my thoughts.
~Jeff

http://www.buffalonews.com/2010/06/26/1095178/rusted-root-tops-off-opening-night.html

The Funky Beets did open the show, The Ragbirds were the group that had the violininst who went onstage for the encore. Rusted Root started at 9:07 and I am fairly certain that the contract only calls for a 1 1/2 hour set, so they went above and beyond what was expected (as they always do)
I think the mix up on the Funky Beets had to do with the person who wrote the preview (I confess...it was me). I assumed the Funky Beets were on at 5:30 but I think the 5:30 time is actually when the gates open. I leave Monroe County at 4:00 PM and make a quick stop home in Albion before hitting the concert so it is nearly impossible for me to catch the first act and I did not have a good contact for the Funky Beets to verify thier start time. I spoke to the Ragbirds manager and he confirmed they were the second act but was unsure what the contractual start time was.

for those of you looking to bring children or a dog, i would not suggest it. it get very crowded and people get slightly rowdy with all the drinking. As a respected nanny in the 716 area, my opinion of bringing children is set- inappropriate.

advice for an enjoyable time is to arrive early because things do get very packed. if your worried about not having something to do in the meantime, there are to great restaurants right on the grounds. Tabbo has fabulous food with flat bread pizzas & the indian restaurant is amazing. if you prefer fast food- i would suggest sub delicious(tittle speaks for itself) or papa leos.
the lowest rate for drinks is at the indian grill but the downfall is the drinks cannot leave the restaurant for that specific place.
keep you id on hand and ready to show- theres several check points
other then that, enjoy!

Kids are fine if they don't mind standing. Usually more room for them toward the back. I've been there with friends who have had smaller kids in strollers.

We're going to 3 Dog Nite tonight...can we bring our own beer? Can we tailgate? Can we bring a blanket? Lawn Chair? What time is a good time to get there in order to find free parking and a good seat?

Anonymous said...

You cannot bring your own concessions as they are what pays for the event. No lawn chairs as it is standing only. The set up is in a mid-block parking lot surrounded by new buildings (see the image in the post)

Free parking can usually be found but it gets farther away the later you arrive. Same of where you choose to stand. I'm not usre how big of a draw Three Dog Night will be so you never know.

Have fun!

Anonymous said...

It's totally rediculous that you can't bring a chair to an outdoor concert! You expect people to stand for 3 or more hours in the blazing sun! How ludicruous! One more reason to hate Lockport. We'll keep going to the Tonawanda concerts and Artpark.

Black Phillip said...

No kidding, I hate that blazing sun.... the 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm sun is the worst!

It sure makes me hate everything in a general area as well.

Anonymous said...

funny!

One of the reason's I can't stand Artpark is all of the space hogging chairs. I can see sitting for a BPO concert, but I guess I am still young enough to feel like any concert worth going to has energized people standing and not half asleep in chairs. ;)

Unknown said...

"What time does ... go on?"

What a diss to the opening acts. Like they're not worth showing up for.

I know a lot of people can't get there at 5pm because of work, but, really, it's an evening out. Get there as early as you can and enjoy it all, not just show up when the headliners come on...

Black Phillip said...

Doc... I wouldn't say that it's a dis... it's just that you go to see who you want to go to see. Me, although I've been annoyed at quite a few opening acts, I have paid (somewhat good money) to specifically see opening acts, just to walk out on the headliner.

Unknown said...

Rocketboy: It's not so much that anyone shouldn't come and see whoever they want. It's more the people who come in at the last minute, already half-in-the-bag and shove their way to the front, then expect you to tell them who they are watching because all they know is "Big-Name-Band" is what they came for.

I've found the enjoyment I've had watching the opening bands has been much better than the experience of the headliners because of the crowd and the rudeness of some people in it.

There is a group of people who show up early every week, and stay the whole show. They're "regulars" and probably all recognize each other. Ask them, they'll tell you the same thing.

I had a "girl" push her way in front of me as I was taking photos so she could take a few pics with her iPhone. I didn't mind that, but when she was done, did she step back? No, she stood there and waved her hands in the air ruining several photos I was taking.

It seems like the "free" in free concerts means free to do whatever you want or free to be a jerk...

Anonymous said...

I heard that the OLP concert this year was pretty rough...lots of police needed. Anyone have any info on that? Saw them last year and while the band put on a great show, I was not at all impressed with the crowd. Rude, pushy drunks with entitlement issues. The worst crowd of any that I've seen there...

Anonymous said...

I understand that folding chairs are not allowed in the concert area. What if someone is disabled and can not stand for an extended length of time? What accommidations are there for these folks?

Anonymous said...

1) annon 10:45 I was at OLP last year, about half way back and had no issues with rude people. Like any other gerneral admission show the prime real estate up front will be crowded and have jockeying for position/views.

2) annon 11:22 Wheel chairs (and kind-of-related stollers) are allowed. I have seen several at each of the shows I have gone too. for those that need "a break" there are pinic tables near the back concessions. There is an unofficial "chair area" that people have carved out outside the official concert area on Locust near Main. The view gives the north side of the stage.

3) Doc/Rocket - We also have to consider that these are Friday night shows heavily full of commuters. Most people pry choose to go home first, eat, etc before comming up. As for "rudeness", see the first point.

Anonymous said...

Went to the kansas concert in Lockport last night. The band was awesome!
We got there early to stake out a claim on a spot right up front. Sure enough some idiot comes along and starts chain smoking right next to me. Half way through the Kansas set, I was choking and hacking so bad we had to move to the back. I became ill from second hand smoke.
Ruined my evening!
Had to go home and shower to try and get the smell off me, and still don't feel right today.
I know it's an outdoor concert, but there must be somme way to ban smoking at this venue and make it smoke free.
Does anyone else feel this way.

Is there seating or do we bring our own seats or do we have to stand the entire time? Lastly, is there stuff to do before the show or do we just show up at around 8pm? Thanking in advance.

Anonymous said...

1) Hard to hear any "choice" words over the music if there are any.

2) Standing only inside. There are picnic tables toward the back near the food area if a break is needed. Some people set up seats outside the venue at Locust Near Main. You can kind of see the side of the stage.

3) Can walk around the city, the Locks etc before hand. Opening bands start around 5 with Main act around 8:30.

Funny that you use the word "magical". We use it in our house once in a while and we felt the same way.

I wasn't overly excited when this show was first announced but my anticipation grew as I researched a bit and recalled how much of the music I did know. There were most likely many intangibles at play, but regardless, it was as near perfection as a show could be. The sound was so good that I could have just as easily been at home with hi-fi headphones on.

Roland and Curt sounded flawless and had a "real" aire about them. No over the top presentation, just letting their playing do all the work. I'd easily pay to see them again if they were ever to come back to the area.

It's got to be hard to ban smoking at the concerts when on of the vendors is a smoke shop and selling cigars...

I don't react that strongly to smoke, but have to agree with the poster above. I've gotten a few facefulls of smoke myself there and don't enjoy it.

I've taken to leaving during the main acts and hanging out on Walnut Street. The sound is good and you don't have to fight a crowd. But, of course, you can't see much.

Big sugar is last concert? there should be more scheduled..it still will be warm out in September! I really like the concerts in lockport. something to look forward to on a Friday night. wish there were more shows coming..

Anonymous said...

It's always sad when they end. I believe it had been extended for three years for 8-10 shows. The first year was 8 and the last two have had 9.

To me the biggest thrill is the feel of an actual "place" where people are out and about interacting.

Another thought is do something similar to "Buffalo Rocks" the Harbor. Have a final weekend or two with some pricer bands and charge $10 or so at the door.

Big Sugar was the BEST show since Lockport took the event over!!!!!!!
