Erie Canal Discovery Center Open

Posted by LoneWolf

Greetings all~

Erie Canal Discovery Center(Located across from the First Presbeterian Church @ Ontario and Chruch) is now ALSO open for tours ( as of yesterday)  9-5 Daily (unless otherwise noted on the website: Erie Canal Discovery Center )

My apologies, however, im not exactly sure of thier prices this year. Last year i belive it was 5$ or 6 $  for adults  4$ for kids. Might want to check out thier link posted above for full details.

I DO  encourage anyone who wants a bit more "in-depth"  and SELF GUIDED tour  of Lockport History to attend this.

The Staff there at the Discovery Center is always willing to help you with any questions you may have about the Center itself, as well as information about more of Lockport History.

I do have to say from PERSONAL EXPERICE,  they did a darn good job of this place. As far as historical aspects and what have you.

Still in all my suggestion would be,  if you want a FULL EXPERINCE  of things known and not known there are many others places that MUST BE VISITED .. take the day to just peruse Lockport with places such as:  Discovery Center, Historical Societey, Cave Tour, Lock Cruise, and the Trolly Ride ( the last of which will be starting up in I believe June, will post details as soon as they are available).

All those, in and of themselves, WILL TAKE a good portion of your day, and will give you MORE THAN ENOUGH information about your own home town to last you a LONG TIME.

Enjoy~

Halloween Split

Posted by Anonymous

According to the LUSJ and The Buffalo News, the Town of Lockport has noted it is not participating in the joint city-town Halloween celebration this year. They have chosen to put on their own speparate "Fall Fest" earlier in the month. This has caused some last minute planning needs for the Melissa Junke and the rest of the city youth department.

“We’ve been thinking the last few years about doing something different, something to get people outside,” she said Wednesday. “The party last year was very successful, but there was a ton of people; we heard some concerns (from volunteers) about safety and the difficulty of showing everyone a good time when there are so many people.”
------------
“This late in the game, the town pulling out definitely will have an impact on (the party). It’ll cost the city more money and, at this point, I don’t know where we’re going to have it,” Junke said. “Halloween seems like a long time off, but it’s not, really, to plan an event of this size.”

The money shortfall and lack of location (was held at volunteer fire dept in town) leaves several questions to be quickly answered. The article mentions Mayor Tucker submitting Canal St. as a location. Not sure on the status of the buildings on the inside, but it could make a unique indoor-outdoor set-up. As for the extra money the LUSJ mentions today that Gary Chapman of Papa Leo's has started a fund raising challenge. Gary has been civic-minded lately for recent events and future ones including planning for this year's DT New Year's Celebration.

Has anyone attended the recent Halloween events and care to share their experience?

As for the lead in image, we decided to humiliate our lab as a Lobster this year. Keep an eye out for her handing out candy on the South Side this year. ;)

Becker Brewing Company

Posted by Anonymous

I saw in the Life and Times in Gasport Blog a post on the debut of the Becker Brewing Company on August 28th. Would this be the closest micro-brew to Lockport? Does Lockport have a place where one can get a variety of local and other micro brews on draft (besides the growlers at Consumer's Beverage)? I'd like to be informed.

Dog Day of Summer Nears

Posted by Anonymous

The Chet Secrist festival fundraiser this Saturday (7/25) is fast approaching. (Weather Forecast: 82° and sunny!) Info can be found at  Chet's Dog House website which appears to have recieved a nice makeover courtesy of the J. Fitzgerald Group (located next door). Go to the Events Page for the continually updated info.

It appears that Buffalo Sabres Patrick Kaleta and Tim Kennedy and Sabretooth will be signing autographs and available for photos at the Kid’s Carnival. There are also over 250 action/raffle/prize items including autographed Sabres' French Connection poster, Timkey Limo wine tour, etc.

Both the LUSJ and Buffalo News  had interviews with Chet posted this past weekend. Both are interesting reads and give great insight to the power of human relationships and caring for those around us.

We hope to be there Sat AM for some pancakes and with the mutt to make the 1K "Dog" walk an actual dog walk. ;)

Lockport in Bloom

Image - Backyard Sundial - Lockport in Bloom Garden Walk - Jul '09

We finally made it out for the Lockport in Bloom garden walk this past Sunday. I was hoping to get out on Saturday so I could post for Sunday but the weather was not cooperative. We focused on the larger houses on High, Willow, and Locust since we have always been curious about these properties during our walks.

I've been a big fan and repeat visitor of Garden Walk Buffalo (last weekend of July). The primary allure was the the seeds of renewal that the event has helped sow in the area west of Richmond Ave. It has pushed redevelopment and investment past the old invisible wall of Richmond and into the "no hope" west side. In 25 years the tour has gone from 25 properties to over 300. The gardens take years to grow and shape and can not be picked up and moved. Beyond beauty they show commitment of the home owner to the neighborhood at large. Visiting every year shows it is contagious and inertial. If anyone has yet to go, I highly suggest it. I recommend starting at Little Sumner.

The most surprising thing I learned was how magical a place a small urban backyard can be. Lush plantings surround a person on all sides giving the safe cozy feeling of youthful forts made out of blankets. A person is more likely to think they are in a small nook in the woods that in a dens eurban neighborhood. The lots were surprisingly deep on the houses we chose in Lockport and while the landscaping and gardens were beautiful all of that extra space seemed to take away some of the above characteristics.

I have high hopes for our small yard in the years the come. Maybe some day a few years from now you'll see us part of the garden walk. ;) As for Lockport in Bloom, I hope it breeds as much success here as Garden Walk Buffalo has 30 minutes south.

I'll tack some Lockport garden photos onto this post as I work on them.

Altro Park Outdoor Movies

Image: AltroPark - Free Outdoor Movie Series - Jul '09

Yesterday LUSJ listed the free movie schedule for Altro Park. We have been looking forward to checking it out as it is one of the many things we can do within walking distance of our house and part of what makes living here as nice as it is.
The 2-story screen is much larger than I expected and the sound was easy to hear. The only issue was a tempermental DVD player that would skip once in a while.
The schedule is as follows, all shows starting at dusk.
• July 8: "Hotel for Dogs"
• July 15: “Twilight.”
• July 22: “Madagascar 2.”
• July 29: “Goonies.” - ***rained out***
Aug. 5: “Coraline.”
Aug. 12: “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.”
• Aug. 19: Rain date (so I've been told)
I'll also give the listed sponsers a shout, who along with the volunteers make great events like this happen in the city.
Movie showings are paid for by sponsors including Reality Check, Dr. Louis Surace, Eaton Medicine and Accurate Computer Service Inc.
Unlike the concert series, there is no beer, no massive crowd and lots of space for blankets, chairs and playing in the park. I'm looking forward to "Goonies", a childhood favorite.

Molson Canal Concert Series

Posted by Anonymous

(Image - Molson Canal Concert Series Security - Lockport NY Jun '08)
The LUSJ is giving the Molson Canal Concert Series #2 on its Top 10 of 2008 list. There were a few good threads on this topic on the LUSJ forums which have since reached their expiration date and are no longer around.
Initially there were many posting about grid lock and ticketing sprees due to lack of parking, drug dealers from the other side of the Harrison Complex taking over from the south, Urban Tower residents taking over from the north, among many other exaggerated pessimistic premonitions which all failed to come true.
I was there for the first show, Lou Gramm, and was initially concerned about the turnout until things really picked up by the time he went on as the main act. Two contributing factors I could see were Lockport being a rather unknown location and that the concerts were being held on a day when a majority of people work until 5pm. My initial feelings were the concert should have stuck to Sat evenings creating "day long" atmosphere possibilities and that the Moslon Concert Series website could have done more than showing a picture of a moving truck announcing a move to "unknown" Lockport. A picture or two of the venue could have gone a long way to initially selling the series here.
The Friday nights grew on me as the series went along. I've always enjoyed trips to Thursday in the Square in Buffalo but it always carried the downer of knowing that I had to return to work the next day. This series made for a very nice "Friday Night Happy Hour" experience. Being a 4 block walk from my house was a great bonus. As the series went on I noticed that 97 Rock would highlight the performer that night as their "Artist of the Day" and promote the show.
Through out the series I was amazed by the variety of people attending. Families with kids in strollers, kids on shoulders, teenage kids, the 20 somethings, middle agers, and the elderly were all present and any that I had the opportunity to strike a conversation with had nothing but good things to say. The police/security presence was always noticeable but never felt over bearing. Locating vendors one "long block" away over on Elm seemed to be too far to gather them a lot of traffic. If they could be found some space on Locust or the lot on the other side of it both the vendors and the concert goers would both make out. Subdelicious seemed to do very well located just across from the east entry next to the stage.
I was able to attend Lou Gramm, Nazareth, Riders on the Storm, REO Speedwagon, and Jeff Martin. Lou Gramm has lost a bit of his voice but the rest of shows had above average sound quality for an outdoor venue that was not designed for acoustics. The only show I could hear from home was the Riders show and it was only if I put my head out the window and focused on it.
I look forward to next summer's shows. This will be the second year of a three year agreement to host a minimum of 8 shows per summer. LUSJ reported that the Charlie Daniel's Band has been shown to be confirmed for the 14th of August. His website confirms this as of now. I'm not to familiar with most of his work but I shall see how good Devil Went Down to Georgia sounds live.
Overall I found it to be a very positive experience. And at a rough cost of $0.50 per resident per "free" show in city tax money, quite the entertainment value and promotional tool.
When industry boomed, thousands of people mulling around Main Street was an
everyday thing. Suffice to say, it’s been a while since “busy” and “downtown”
went into the same sentence routinely

This is way over simplified. Mass demolition urban "renewal" blunders, lack of regional planning, etc had a lot more to do with the massive decline of DT activity than the loss of some industry. There is also no reason it can not be planned back in and recreated if residents truly want to see it happen again. Those are topics for other days. ;)
