No retraction here...

It looks like my opinions over the downtown wine shop will stand as is...

Questions raised over wine store - US&J

Important quotes for the skimmers out there:

“I have no desire to help bring people to this town any more,” Martin said. “I think the mayor made the biggest tactical error ever by screwing with me. I will never, ever, lift a finger for the city again, that’s my bottom line.”

and

Bittner said her business will be different from the one Beautiful Visions proposed in several regards. Theirs was a cooperative and hers is to be controlled solely by The Winery At Marjim Manor. Theirs envisioned making shelf space available to all Trail wineries to display as little or as much product as they wanted. Hers will invite Trail wineries to showcase one or two products a month based on themes. Both incorporated local, packaged product displays and a local tourism-promotion component, but Bittner said she intends to create event and education centers as well.

And the Mayor seems to be guilty of trying to get something, ANYTHING into canal street at any cost.

So what's the end result?

  • Pissed off a well respected local busnessman and property owner downtown who was known for their charitable work, to the point that they have pulled back from the City and the County, and might just move somewhere else.
  • Allowed Margo Bitner to take the idea and distort it to the point that the winery will be all about her, and in order to make it seem like she's playing nice she's allowing one winery a month to sell one or two wines.

Good job!

I just hope Martin reconsideres his decision to pull out of the area. He just got screwed over by a greedy busnesswoman, and the mayor was just too willing to turn around and give full support for someone else with the same project.

Dog Day of Summer Nears

Posted by Anonymous

The Chet Secrist festival fundraiser this Saturday (7/25) is fast approaching. (Weather Forecast: 82° and sunny!) Info can be found at  Chet's Dog House website which appears to have recieved a nice makeover courtesy of the J. Fitzgerald Group (located next door). Go to the Events Page for the continually updated info.

It appears that Buffalo Sabres Patrick Kaleta and Tim Kennedy and Sabretooth will be signing autographs and available for photos at the Kid’s Carnival. There are also over 250 action/raffle/prize items including autographed Sabres' French Connection poster, Timkey Limo wine tour, etc.

Both the LUSJ and Buffalo News  had interviews with Chet posted this past weekend. Both are interesting reads and give great insight to the power of human relationships and caring for those around us.

We hope to be there Sat AM for some pancakes and with the mutt to make the 1K "Dog" walk an actual dog walk. ;)

Image - Photo merge of Outwater Fireworks and Main St. Jul '09

I've enabled anonymous commenting to possibly bring more people into the fold. I appreciate all feedback and conversation. Comments were initially restricted due to the true poor behavior on the LUSJ forums last fall. That behavior has been absent for quite awhile and I've always hated to make people to sign up for another account they may not have. If everything stays respectfulI'll keep commenting set up this way.

Image above is from a walk last night and the fireworks on Sat. Not much scenery at Outwater Park to compose around so I had the idea last night to merge a firework shot with a DT night scene.

Chet's Festival Fundraiser: 7-25

Posted by Anonymous

LUSJ has an article about the fundraising activities for Chet Secrist, owner of Chet’s Dog House on Main Street. It was heartening to hear of the initial vision for a fundraiser but it is amazing to see how big of an event is planned. Goes to show the value of an active community to help out in a time of need.
Located a short walk from me, I am sad to say that I have yet to stop in, usually due to the hours of operation not matching up to my hours of hunger. I pray for his recovery and the resulting chance to stop in for a celebration dog.
Activities form the article:
Confirmed aspects include:
• A 5K Dog Race and 1-mile Dog Walk. The route is still being worked out,
according to Martin.
• Live music from the city stage in front of City Hall, from roughly 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Lockport Federation of Musicians will kick off the festival with the National Anthem, sung by Buffalo Sabres’ anthem singer Doug Allen, and a 90-minute concert, then yield the stage to roughly 10 local rock bands.
• A “dog biscuit” eating contest featuring a favored Chet’s menu item, the bacon/sausage-and-egg on English muffin sandwich. This one’s set for noon in
front of the Dog House.
• A kids’ carnival at Ida Fritz Park with a bounce house, pony rides, a dunk tank, a duck pond, water and sack races, face painting, balloons, magicians, a clown, a storyteller and live kids music.
Lotsa food — The day will kick off with the race/walk and a pancake breakfast served inside and outside the Dog House. Lockport-based Lake Effect Ice Cream is creating a special “Chet’s” ice cream for the event; and food booths will be set up by a variety of restaurants. Commitments already have been made by Papa Leo’s, Danny Sheehan’s, the Fieldstone, Pour Boyz and One Eyed Jack’s. Beer, soda and water will be sold.
• Raffles and commemorative product sales.
